If you watched the Recording Academy’s 59th Annual Grammy Awards last night, then you know the night was filled with many highlights such as Beyonce’s graceful performance while pregnant; Adele’s do-over performance and taking home a bunch of wins while admiring Beyonce; and so much more! But, the most significant of them all is independent artist, Chance The Rapper, who was nominated for 7 Grammys and took home three of them for New Artist of the Year, Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance! Chance The Rapper’s album was a streaming-only album which is normally not considered to be eligible for the Grammy’s! But Chance the Rapper stood up for what he believed in by originally boycotting the Grammy’s, which made the Recording Academy change their regulations. This is the first in Grammy’s history! I believe Chance the Rapper gave hope to indie artist.
As a woman in this industry and studying the game, I have realized there is no right or wrong way to do things in any type of industry. Of course there are standards but there’s always someone who stands out and make a change by creating a new lane for artists. Independent artists should be inspired to do what it takes because they, too, can be nominated and win Grammy awards and reach a level of success without having a label supporting them. They just have to make sure their business is right but the strategy to achieve success is based on what works for that individual. So this is what I mean by there is no right or wrong way. It is always known for when someone breaks a barrier, it becomes the new trend or strategy that others replicate.
So, to all indie artists, do what it takes to reach the level of success you want. Create your own lane if any other lanes are not allowing you in!
Congratulations to Chance The Rapper for making a difference and winning his Grammy Awards!
