Freeform Network, formerly known as ABC Family premieres new pilot, “Recovery Road”

For those of you who grew up watching original content on ABC Family like Lincoln Heights or Twisted, you would know that the network programming targeted adolescents and their ideals. On January 12th, 2016 ABC Family changed their name to Freeform. Freeform, according to the President of ABC Family, “…evokes the spirit and adventure of our audience.” They aim to continue airing the highly rated shows that were on ABC family in addition to producing new content based on Freeform amended mission, hence new shows Recovery Road and Shadow Hunters.

I had reservations about these internal changes, but being a part of the ABC viewing family, my loyalty swayed me in giving Freeform a chance. Recovery Road premiered Monday, January 25th, 2016.

It is a series pilot starring Jessica Sula, Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married actress –Sharon Leal, Kyla Pratt, and Paula Jai Parker. Jessica Sula plays a high school girl sent to a teen outpatient rehabilitation center for substance abuse. The series will follow her rehabilitation in addition to other issues teenagers such as sexual intercourse, death, and depression.

I do not know what is to come of Recovery Road, but I do know teenage substance abuse is a topic worth exploring as viewers become older and too prideful to confide in the adults around them.

Watch their latest episodes on Mondays, 9pm EST, on Freeform. Check your local listings.
